Robert Edward Melhorn, 85 Robert Melhorn


Robert Edward Melhorn, 85, of Sidney, formerly of Quincy, died at 9:43 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at his residence after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Quincy on Aug. 12, 1922, a son of the late Frank and Addie Hampsher Melhorn. On Dec. 16, 1945, he married the former Mariana Jane Sherwood, and she preceded him in death on July 19, 2005. A brother, Jack Melhorn, and a sister, Shirley Coleman, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Mike (Sharon) Melhorn of Bellbrook and Gary (Pam) Melhorn of Kettering; a daughter, Jane (Kent) Witt Sr. of Sidney; a sister, Bette Conover of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Kent Witt Jr., Kyle Witt, Susan Melhorn, Katy Witt, Kelly Witt, Rob Melhorn and Steve Melhorn; and many nieces and nephews.

A 1940 Quincy High School graduate, he served in the Pacific Theater with U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a radio operator for the 418th Night Fighter Squadron stationed in New Guinea. He began working at the Hi-Grade Oil Company in Quincy as a young boy and retired as its president in 1988.

One of the oldest members of the Quincy United Methodist Church, he was a member of Logan Memorial VFW Post 3528 in Quincy and Boggs Lodge F&AM 292 and Miami Valley American Legion Post 652, both in DeGraff, and volunteered as a tutor for Ohio Reads at Riverside Local Schools.

Pastor N. Matthew Wright presided over the funeral services held Friday, December 20, 2007, at Quincy United Methodist Church, with remembrances offered by his son Mike Melhorn, daughter Jane Witt and grandson Kent Witt Jr., followed by the burial service at Fairview Cemetery in Quincy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Quincy United Methodist Church.
